What is Certified Special Events Professional (CSEP)?
The CSEP designation is the hallmark of professional
achievement in the special events industry. It is
earned through education,
performance, experience, and service to the industry,
and reflects a commitment to professional conduct
and ethics.
The CSEP designation is awarded by the International
Special Events Society (ISES) and its Certification
Committee. ISES is the only international umbrella
organization
representing
professionals in all disciplines of the special
events industry. Education and a commitment to
professionalism
are cornerstones of ISES.
Why Should I Be Certified?
The special events industry has experienced phenomenal
growth over the past several years and is changing
at an even faster pace. Today, special events
are more challenging
and require a level of professionalism equal

Spotlight
Michele Rogers -President of Accolade of
London, Inc.
A Full Service Event Planning Company.
Email: acolondon@comcast.net
Originally
from London England, Michele came over to the USA on
tour for a year with a dance troupe. On the same
tour was (now her husband of 18 years) Jont Rogers who
played in the band. They married in England the following
year, after which she returned to the States, hung up her
dancing shoes, and started Accolade of London.
Accolade
started serving Midwest brides in 1986. In 1986 you had
to work really hard to share with brides what a
consultant did, and why they should hire you? Now of course
the savvy bride knows all about consultants and how they
can actually help save money while making the whole planning
process a fun and pleasurable one. Michele believes the
planning process should be fun and pleasurable, because
you will spend a whole lot longer planning it, than the
6–8 hours actually experiencing.
In
1996 Michele wanted to expend her business to include
corporate clients. She loved working with brides but did
not want to get burned out. Secondly, Corporate America
pays more and you don’t have to work so many weekends.
The expansion has proved to be the perfect balance. She
loves everything about the expansion, but please remember
she still does weddings.
Michele
has been very blessed with her business and has had steady
growth consistently over the years. She has
had the honor to works on three Inaugural Balls, two for
Mayor Peterson, and one for Governor O’Bannon. Accolade
works on many of the special events with the Mayor’s
office, including the Mayor’s Celebration of Diversity
Luncheon, an annual event, which on January 26th 2005 had
1060 people. The Canal FamilyFest, held annually on July
4th down on the canal hosts over 5000 people as they come
downtown before the Freedom Blast Fireworks. Accolade did
all the opening events, seven in all, related to the opening
of the St. Vincent Children’s Hospital in 2002. Other
clients include Indy Jazz Fest, Regal Cinemedia Events
- Microsoft, Capital Improvement Board, and The Greater
Indianapolis Progress Committee.
Community
Volunteer involvement is very important to expand ones
experience and networking opportunities. Michele is
on the board of Dance Kaleidoscope and for the past three
years has chaired their annual fundraiser, increasing revenue
each year. She has worked with Sports Corp on Big Ten Men’s
and Women’s Basketball Championships, and in December
co-chaired the National League of Cities Closing Event
for 2700 people at the State Museum.
Michele’s
ISES affiliation started with Indiana Association of
Event Planners, which eventually became
ISES. She has served on the ISES Board, 1998- 2001, and
has seen many members come and go over the years.
On a personal note, Michele has the most supportive and
wonderful husband anyone could ask for, Jont Rogers, two
wonderful sons Richard and James who both have put on their
fair share of chair covers, and a great big dog Maggi.
Her family still lives in England so she travels back every
year. Indianapolis is a wonderful place to live and have
a business, she has enjoyed seeing the city grow, and loves
being able to call Indy home.

The
Scoop
Here’s
the scoop on member news……….
It seems as if the Indiana membership is having a slow
winter in news, so I will use this opportunity to promote
a couple of items:
1)
If you know of any news in the Indiana chapter, such
as new employees, job changes, new baby arrivals (Lord
knows we have had many of those as of late), or companies
that have received awards recently, please contact me so
that we can publish them in the scoop. This section of
the newsletter is for our members to learn about new and
exciting news that is happening in our chapter.
2) Since we are slow in the news section this month I
would like to promote an event that is being produced by
our friends at the Cincinnati chapter:
ISES Cincinnati and the Association of Bridal Consultants
(ABC) will be hosting the 1st annual "An Affair
to Remember...Jewels Of The Seasons" on Sunday,
February 20, 2005 from 11am - 6pm.
This
is a very upscale bridal event, not like a typical bridal
show. It is targeted to the bride & groom, their
parents, or anyone who is invested in the style of their
wedding.
Each
ballroom of the beautiful and historic Hilton Cincinnati
Netherland Plaza Hotel is being decorated to reflect a
season with "over the top" decor.
In keeping with the style of the event, ISES and ABC are
proud to have Preston Bailey and Sasha Souza as the guest
speakers.
Preston
Bailey, author of "Design for Entertaining" and
the new "Fantasy Weddings" has been featured
on and designed events for Oprah Winfrey, as well as the
weddings of Matt Lauer, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones,
Melissa Rivers & more, including last weekend's "event
of the year" --- Donald Trump's wedding in Florida!
(January 22, 2005)
Sasha
Souza Events, with locations in Napa Valley & Beverly
Hills, was recently honored by Modern Bride Magazine as
one of the top 25 trendsetters in the wedding industry.
The event is open to the public and the cost is $75 per
person. This includes a gourmet lunch, the speakers, an
invitation to travel throughout the different rooms to
see the decor and to view the Design Competition Tabletops
for inspiration.
Tickets are available on-line at www.ISESCincinnati.com.
If
you have news that you would like printed in “The
Scoop” please contact Jason Felders at jfelders@indianahistory.org.

Kyle
Buckley
Upon being asked by an enthusiastic, young, energetic, “I
want to do events” shouting individual, “What
is the key to success in this industry and how do I succeed?”...I
always tell them, you have got to work in every position
of as many different types of events as possible, make
your connections and do not be afraid of hard work. Always
being one to practice what I preach, I cannot believe that
it was actually eight years ago that I began as a Server
for Hoaglin Fine Catering...and then I worked it! From
there, Event Manager, Staffing Coordinator, Event Planner
and my current position of Vice President. I absolutely
adore my career. I must admit I truly relish in and enjoy
the social benefits of this industry. From the side of
attending all the fundraisers ~ having an extensive knowledge
and appreciation of culinary delights ~ to serving on committees
and boards ~ forming lasting friendships ~ to simply experiencing
and embellishing our events.
Hoaglin
Fine Catering is under the umbrella of Rob Hoaglin, Inc.
The other companies under this umbrella are our Hoaglin
To Go Marketplaces: with our newest gem being the restaurant
on Mass Ave and American Pie: our corporate delivery catering
division which we began in January of 2002. Our clients
have wrapped their arms around American Pie – yummy
comfort foods prepared by the same chefs that prepare our
Hoaglin menus – dropped off wherever or fully catered
on a simple scale – very budget focused. Next is
our In-Flight Faire which services private jets utilizing
Indianapolis International and all of the surrounding private
airports. All these entities keep the Hoaglin Team really
hopping! My job is behind the scenes – until it is
time to get out and spend time in the community. I am all
about costs, profits, efficiency, employee morale, motivation,
marketing, research, training, supporting – I believe
you get the picture.
Being
involved in this industry has given me a gift that I
don’t know that I would have come across if a different
career path had been chosen. I have been introduced to
philanthropy which in return has strongly motivated to
give both in time and financially to so many of the causes
in our community. I have had the opportunity to serve on
boards or committees for Aids Research and Hospice, Child
Abuse Prevention, Adult Illiteracy, Education for Special
Needs Children and various Women’s organizations
and now I am enjoying getting involved in the Muscular
Dystrophy Family Foundation as our Outreach Award Recipient.
For me, this is what it is all about. This is what makes
you feel good at the end of the day ~ to make a positive
difference in people’s lives.

Their national headquarters is right here in Indianapolis
and has a staff of only four individuals!!! They take
