July Meeting Recap

“Once Upon an Octopus…”

July’s ISES Indiana meeting was truly unique. Special thanks to Ed Trout and Troy Hanna from Comedy Sportz for teaching us all that we should not be afraid to make fools of ourselves. They offered ISES members a mini taste of their “Group Unity Training Seminar” (GUTS) which is a series exercises to help build confidence and teach others how to work together as a team.

Some of the takeaways from these exercises included learning to trust your instincts, work together to complete a goal, know that it’s natural for everyone to make mistakes, and don’t worry about things that are out of your control. For instance, in one exercise, ISES members were asked to sit in a circle and each person contributed one word to the previous word to create a whimsical, nonsensical, story line. The trick was that you couldn’t decide your word until it was your turn and there was no way to predict which direction the story would take until then. Thus “Once upon an octopus…” (the beginning of the story line) taught us that you can only deal with what is immediately in front of you; worrying about it in advance is wasted energy. Other exercises included team charades, ice breaker games to learn commonalities, and word games such as “Zip, Zap, Zop” where thinking fast on your feet became fun competition.

Former ISES Indiana President, Kari Strolberg, CSEP, who was present to swear in the new 2010-2011 ISES Indiana Board (see list below), remarked that the meeting was “fun and unique in that we became a part of the program and were able to learn something from each other”. In addition to corporate training seminars, Comedy Sportz also offers improv matches, MC’s to host your events, and unique product placement opportunities. Visit their website at www.indycomedysportz.com for more information.

Special thanks to our July meeting sponsors: The Rathskeller, Comedy Sportz, A-Classic Party Rental, and JP Parker Flowers.
