ISES
Did the Decade - That Benefited Schools on Wheels
ISES
Indiana members spent April 26 helping out at the Irsay
Pavilion for School on Wheels. The event was a hit! From
the entertainment to the auction, every guest had a great
time. Guests and volunteers all dressed in their grooviest
digs to make the event festive.
School
on Wheels organization was created to address the issue
of homeless children's education by enhancing learning experiences
during the time of crises in their lives. The organization
provides one-on-one tutoring to homeless children. They
are there to assist them with the highest quality educational
assistance and mentoring possible. The money that was raised
at this event will go to the purchase of backpacks full
of school supplies for those children that are in need of
help to further their education.
ISES
Indiana's part in making this event one to remember was
done with the help of our vendors who were willing to contribute
time and wares to the cause. A big thanks to Kari Strolberg
and Anne Steinberg for their planning of this wonderful
event!

Board
Member Profile
Bruce
Livingstone - ISES Indiana Treasurer
Bruce landed in Indianapolis almost 3 years ago to become
the Director of Catering of the "new" Indianapolis
Marriott Downtown just 7 months before its opening in February
of 2001. Coming to the Midwest from Southern California
was an easy decision because he wanted to move closer to
his family and friends on the East coast (but not "too
close") and as Bruce said, "for what I paid for
my house in Broad Ripple, I couldn't buy a one-bedroom condo
in Southern California." Bruce was previously the Assistant
Director of Conference Services at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna
Niguel.
Although
he had always been on the servicing side of events, the
sales side came easy for Bruce. "My mission was to
move to this City and get to know as many people as possible
and book events at the newest hotel in town
..EASY!"
As the Director of Catering, Bruce is responsible for booking
local catering events and filling the meeting space every
day he can.
In
Bruce's personal life, his love for disadvantaged children
brings him many hours of happiness. Just 9 months ago Bruce
became a foster parent to two brothers that he met while
working with abused kids. "I've kept in touch with
them over the years, and when I got the call asking if I
was interested in taking guardianship of TJ & Michael,
I immediately said, "Yes!'" It's definitely been
a life-changing event, and while it's been more challenging
than he thought, he wouldn't change a thing. Both boys witnessed
their father murder their mother 9 years ago and come with
some "baggage," as you'd imagine. TJ is currently
working in the catering business, as well, as he finished
high school last June.
Bruce
has also been a "Big Brother" to three brothers
in Indy for the past year through the Children's Bureau
of Indianapolis. The boy's, ages 10, 12 & 14, have also
become a huge part of Bruce's daily life.
Bruce
sits on the Board for the Legacy House, a victim services
center (where his two boys attend therapy twice a week);
Edelweiss House, a start-up children's home coming to the
area in July of this year and Best Buddies, an organization
that pairs adults with disabilities with a "buddy."
In
regard to what Bruce wants to say to those reading this,
it's simply, GET INVOLVED. "ISES has been a huge factor
in getting to know so many great people I've met in Indianapolis,
and it's only because I came here and got involved right
away."
