September Meeting Recap

September’s ISES meeting was an exciting chance for all members to visit an elaborate set-up for a corporate event. The meeting, entitled CHROME (Corporate Hospitality Rethinking Our Meetings and Events) challenged ISES members to re-think corporate meetings and to discuss the planning that went into the event space. In a panel discussion, Gene Huddleson and Anne Steinberg of Detail + Design, Vince Early of Thomas Caterers of Distinction and Patrick Sechrist of ELS Productions, discussed the team effort required to produce the event.

Tip of the Month
When holding an outdoor, tented event, remember to always have the catering kitchen or catering tent connected to the dining tent. Nothing worse than a pop-up thunderstorm occurring during dinner service and there not being any protection for the servers carrying the dinner plates!

Member Spotlight - Pam Parker, JP Parker Flowers, LLC

1) How long have you been in the events industry?/What first interested you in being an event professional?
I knew I had a passion for events starting with my work experience in Minneapolis 13 years before returning to my roots in Indiana. I was a general manager for a multi location floral chain with stores in St. Paul and Minneapolis. Minneapolis was growing as an event city with the opening of their City Center and some major hotels. They combined the grand opening of their City Center and The American Association of Executives Convention. The City of Minneapolis hired me to oversee the look of all areas. The company I was manager for had several events in the same time frame including the opening of the centerpiece hotel. I was thrown into the fire of having many hats. “I loved it”. I knew events were for me!

2) What has your best event been?
My best event was when I returned to Indiana and my first project was to decorate the “newly” renovated Union Station for the holidays. While the decorations were up in early December, I also did The American Bus Associations Gala in the station. It was a time when as a small new company in Indiana, we pulled off a major event. I still remember the mixed wonderful feelings of gratitude, pride, humility and exhaustion.

3) What has been your worst event and how did you overcome the challenges?
I have not had an event that stood out as my worse event. Most challenging would be that November of Holiday Decorating when Union Station opened and the fire marshal had issues with the $30,000.00 worth of product I had purchased. He threatened to strike the product. I watched as they tested it with a torch and it passed. I learned you don’t do anything in business without covering your bases.

4) How did you first learn about ISES Indiana?
I leaned of ISES when I did the 100 year Anniversary of The Columbia Club for Wiersma Events. Betsy Wiersma entered the event in the ISES awards. We won Best Event and J P Parker Flowers won Best Floral.

5) What do you feel the value is of being an ISES Member?
As an ISES member I am able to network with professionals who are the top in their field. I have always felt our company has been successful because of relationships. I encourage my staff to never stop learning. ISES fulfills an artistic inspiration and energy only we in the business can provide to each other.

Words of Wisdom: please share a favorite quote or something that you would like to pass on to others.
Part of my passion for flowers includes growing flowers at our flower farm. I love sunflowers. We grow 300,000. Most varieties of sunflowers move their head toward the sun as the sun moves from east to west during the day. When times get tough my favorite saying is “Keep your face to the sun!”
