August Meeting
Recap
The August ISES Indiana Meeting was held at Howl at the Moon
in Downtown Indianapolis. During registration and networking
the piano players from Howl at the Moon gave the attendees
some great background music. As guests proceeded through
the buffet line, provided by Venture Catering, the musicians
continued to previewing their nightly show.
After the performance,
Larry Sauer of Encore Entertainment and Pat Sechrist
of ELS Productions gave
a panel discussion
covering the “ins and outs” of the event entertainment
industry.

Tip
of the Month
Always
check how much electricity is in a building, where
it is and who needs it. Nothing is worse
then the lighting dimming every time the coffeemaker
is running.

Spotlight -
Robin Shanks
1)
How long have you been in the events industry?
I have done events in one form or another all my (work ing)
life. I actually started out working for garage bands in
my teens, and before I was twenty I was working with the
best bands out of the Indianapolis area. These acts occasionally
performed at special events (live music seemed like a bigger
attraction in the 80’s?). I got to know some folks
who did special events and thought it seemed like a natural
extension to my interests, so I went to work with a production
company: Mark Dodd’s DTI. From there I landed at Purdue
University, where I began as the Audio Supervisor for Elliott
Hall of Music and now I serve as Manager for Event Sales
and Strategic Planning for the University’s “in-house”
production company, Hall of Music Productions.
2)
What first interested you in being an event professional?
Once I began working for
DTI, I found many transferable
skills from production managing music shows that related
to special events, so it seemed a natural fit. And as much
as I enjoyed the national travel with Dodd though, when
my wife and I started a family and a position opened up
on Purdue’s West Lafayette Campus it seemed like
a great opportunity to stay close to home. So while I “work” in
a theater, and our department operates the main performance
venues on campus, we recognized an opportunity to serve
the campus and local community more broadly by applying
skills gleaned in the special events industry in combination
with the equipment in the theatres (which wasn’t
always in use). Now, roughly 40% of the work we do now
isn’t happening in one of the three theaters we operate
on campus. That was around 400 events last year. I used
to do a lot of the on-site event management but we have
grown with a great team of event managers and they do the
vast majority of the on-site work while I focus on sales
along with planning and assessment.
3)
What has your best event been?
There have been
so many it’s really difficult to say but what they
all have had in common was that my client was very satisfied
and the audience appreciated it. Making a difference is
a very rewarding experience.
4)
What has been your worst event and how did you overcome
the challenges?
Either a major
amateur sporting kick-off
event where we had a skydiver landing and the skydiver’s
wireless mic didn’t work when it was time for the
Emcee to hear from him, so I quickly grabbed a talk back
microphone at the mixing console and, well, let’s
just say that the check in happened as scheduled though
it might have been from a closer perspective than 5000’ above
downtown Indy! Or, the time the CEO of a major corporation
we were doing an event for in Phoenix rode into the ballroom
to the tune of the William Tell Overture and when they
arrived on their mark the horse decided to leave its mark,
if you get my point. It’s funny to look back at it
now, but at the time, well, you can imagine that at the
time...
5)
How did you first learn about ISES Indiana?
I think
it was a flyer I received for the Special Event conference.
6)
What do you feel the value is of being an ISES Member?
Seems there are many great things about membership: Meeting
great people like Anne Marie, who was so kind to me when
we met on the plane coming back from the show in Dallas;
opportunities to make new friends (always important); having
more resources and development opportunities all come to
mind as well opportunities to be of service.
Words of Wisdom: please share a favorite quote or something
that you would like to pass on to others.
“If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably
doesn’t lead to anywhere.” –Frank A.
Clark
