December Luncheon

Thursday, December 12, 2002
Alberta Lathan "Musical Selections by Alberta Lathan" flutist
Comedy Sportz

ComedySportz is part comedy, part sporting event (hence the name). Two teams of "act-letes" compete against each other for points by playing improv games. There are uniforms, fouls and even a referee. To add to the hilarity, the act-letes will base their scenes on audience suggestions.

Improv games are meant to be acted out without scripts. Sort of like life. In the office or at home, to be successful, you have to think on your feet. You'll experience and enjoy a program that demonstrates the basics of improv and the pros of team building.

Our Outreach Effort was a great success!
ISES was a part of the 2002 Chairish the Children on November 9th. As an organization we helped to auction off 30 chairs totaling over $5000 to go to the wonderful charity of PCAI, Prevent Child Abuse Indiana. ISES Indiana will continue to provide our services with Outreach opportunities in the future, so lend a hand and help those that are in need. Information on the next events we will be helping with is to come.

Toys For Tots is our time to give back!
At the December 12th meeting at the Columbia Club remember to bring that special gift to give to a special child. Representatives from the US Marine Corps Reserve will be on hand at the meeting to receive your gifts and answer any questions about the organization. Toys for Tots is a wonderful giving organization that helps put smiles on faces and glows in the hearts of children that don’t get the extras for the holidays. They started in 1947 with the goal of “bringing the joys of Christmas to America’s needy children.” The Foundation is now ranked #289 in the 2001 “Philanthropy 400” and growing strong. Lets make a child’s holidays one to remember by bringing a new unwrapped toy to the meeting on the 12th.

Making the Holiday Season a Safe One!
For many, the holiday season is a time for celebrating with family and friends. Marathon cooking sessions lead to what seems like an endless parade of leftovers. Holiday travel is rewarded with reconnection with loved ones. Unfortunately, those leftovers and travels could put you and others in danger. Here are some tips that will help ensure that your holidays will be a source of fun and happiness:

Holiday Food Safety
  1. Thaw food in the refrigerator, not on the counter.
  2. Make sure that meat juices can’t drip into other foods in the refrigerator.
  3. Always wash you hands before and after handling food, and be especially careful after handling raw meat and poultry.
  4. Keep surfaces and utensils clean. Use one non-porous cutting board for raw meats and another for fruits and vegetables.
  5. Keep hot foods hot (140 degree or above) and cold foods cold (below 40 degrees).
  6. Don’t leave food at room temperature for more than two hours.
  7. Don’t store food in the same container it was in before it was cooked - unless it’s been washed in hot soapy water.
  8. Place food to be refrigerated in small, shallow containers. Large containers may allow food in the center to stay warm longer, providing and ideal breeding spot for bacteria.
  9. Don’t serve leftovers that are more that four days old.
  10. Re-heat all leftover food to their original cooking temperature
Call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at (800) 535-4555 with any questions about food preparation.

Be responsible with alcohol

If you are traveling this holiday season, be responsible. Even small amounts of alcohol can impair the skills involved in driving. Studies show that drivers who drink alcohol are less likely to ensure that child passengers are wearing their seat belts, so be aware for the children. If you are the holiday host, you can make a difference in the safety of you guests by offering a variety of nonalcoholic beverages. Don’t let guests mix their own drinks; instead, choose a reliable “bartender” to help keep track of the size and number of drinks that guests consume. You should also stop serving alcohol 90 minutes before the guests leave, and serve dessert—not alcohol— with coffee. If, in spite of your efforts, some of your guests have too much to drink, invite them to stay over.

By following these tips you can ensure that your holidays are safe —and remember for all the right reasons!
